Crater Lake

Crater Lake is eighty miles from Ashland, but is worth the trek. The lake is famous and much loved for its intense blue color. Take the Rim Drive around the lake and admire the lake and the surrounding wilderness from a number of vantage points. For those who want to get a bit closer, the Park Service offer boat tours of the lake’s surface when weather permits. The park receives about 533 inches of snow each year, which is some of the most of anywhere in the country. This means that from October to June, accessibility to the lake and the park is pretty low. The best time to visit is in the summer months when the snow is melted and the park can be experienced in all its glory.

Oregon Caves National Park is another attraction that’s a bit further afoot, but the 70 miles from Ashland are totally worth it. Smell the fir trees and admire the grand and beautiful Douglas Fir that has the widest-known girth of any in Oregon. Then venture underground on a magnificent cave tour of the Oregon Caves. The tours are only offered in late March through the end of November, and there are some physical requirements, but if you can tour them, do. You won’t regret it!
